0006: Crafting The Ideal EDC With Prepared Always

Welcome to 0006 in the new TitleBeard series, Crafting The Ideal EDC.  This week, we’re chatting with another one of my friends from Instagram, @prepared_always.  Have a look at what he has to say about his everyday carry.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

I work in insurance currently, however I am in the process of becoming a firefighter. Being a first responder has been my passion since I was little. Coupled with my passion for helping others in emergency situations is my obsession with preparedness. Being prepared for any situation. I have really taken preparedness seriously for about the past five years. In October 2016 I decided to start my Instagram page @prepared_always to hold myself accountable for being prepared, encourage others to be prepared, and to exchange knowledge and experiences with other like-minded people. The response has been overwhelming and I am so glad to be a part of this community on Instagram.

What’s in your daily EDC that you carry on your person?

How long have you been carrying your EDC?

About 5 months.

Why is your EDC and carrying these items important to you?

They give me confidence and peace of mind.  They make my life easier.  They give me the opportunity to assist others who are less prepared.

What one item do you always have on you no matter the environment?

Medical supplies.

What’s your favorite item in your EDC?

My Skeletool CX

Does your EDC change, and if so, how often?

It does slightly. Based on what I am doing, where I am going, and what I am wearing. However the items I have mentioned go with my 99% of the time. Things I add or drop depending on conditions I have omitted from this list.

How long did it take you to put together your current EDC?

About a year. It is always evolving as I find better solutions and gain more experience. It is foolish to claim an EDC as “the best”. We are all on a journey, crafting our Ideal EDC. It is a never ending process. There is not a one “best” EDC for everyone. The cool thing about your EDC is it is unique to you and your lifestyle. It says a lot about you and what you value most. Take inspiration from other’s EDCs but don’t make yours just like other’s because they claim to know all. The best EDC is the one you use and the one you actually carry every day. Hence the name. I see people with these ridiculous setups “flexing” their tacticool muscles for Instagram but there is no way they can carry that every day.

What approach/philosophy did you take when assembling your EDC?

Less is more. If you have a ton of crap in your EDC you aren’t going to carry it every day. If you have a giant gun and or a bad holster you are discouraging yourself from carrying. Place priority on the things you use most. For me that is my multitool and flashlight. Medical supplies are lacking from many EDC setups I see on a daily basis. You are more likely to need medical supplies than a gun. And if you need your gun you are probably going to need some medical supplies. Not saying you shouldn’t carry your gun, but if you do, at least carry a tourniquet. In summary, carry what you need and what you will actually use. Take a minimalist approach but put thought behind everything you carry. Don’t spend all your time customizing your gun when you have an uncomfortable holster and a no medical supplies.

What’s one item you’d like to carry more often?

I wish I could carry a bigger/ brighter flashlight. But I am still searching your one I can carry comfortably in my pocket every day.

What’s one item you’d like to add to your EDC?

More medical supplies. I would like to double to size of my personal medical kit but since I can’t wear cargo pants every day, carrying more than I have now is difficult.

What item(s) do you think is missing from most people’s EDC?

Medical Supplies. As well as the knowledge and skills to utilize the supplies.

Do you have any stories about how your EDC came in useful for you outside of regular daily use/saved the day?

Not at the moment.

Where can we find you on social media?
